Water vs. Fire

fire

Geez, lately Magnus has been asking some really tough questions that I am finding almost next to impossible to explain to a 5 year old. Sometimes I am not too sure where the questions come from but they are really starting to challenge my ability to clarify his world around him - so I have decided to put the young man’s education in your hands as well and see if you can help me (and the Big Guy) out. Here is this week’s Magnus Mindzapper:

“Dad, you know when there was the big fire in Penticton?”
“Yes”
“Why does water win out over fire?”
“Hmmmm…”

  1. Tom says it is because water removes the oxygen from fire.

  2. “Daddy, what’s oxygen?”
    “Oxygen is what we breath.”
    “How does fire breath oxygen?”
    “Let me ask Tom…”

  4. Craig, your the dad and get to envolk “The Rule”. When dad answers a queation it is persumed to be correct. (ha, ha). However, fire is made up of oxygen, Fuel and heat remove one of these and you put out the fire. Hope this helps, Tom

  5. I use that liberty quite often but for me it is trying to describe it to him so HE understands - I know (relatively) the answer but find it very difficult sometimes to enlighten him the answer on his terms. That’s the challenge!

  6. I was babysitting Lucas yesterday and so I put the question to him and his reply was “well grandma that is very easy the reason water wins over fire is because it is cold and wet and that always puts out fire”. A simple answer from the mind of a 7 year old.
