Humble Beginnings

September 30, 2009

Went down to Dalian this past weekend to take a look at the beginning process of Case’s and mine new/old Chang Jiang 750 motorbikes. Da Doa (the guy in the green shirt) is the man in charge of the resurrection of these bikes and is a total bike enthusiast; for 10 years Da Doa was a member of the People’s Liberation Army in China and spent many hours riding in the Chang Jiang doing some type of murky army business. Anyways, I went down to a body shop where Da Doa’s friend works and saw how they will strip everything down, grind it clean and then re-paint/chrome it. The bike you see in the slideshow will either be mine or Case’s and does indeed look very rough right now, but let me assure you ladies and gentlemen, when these bikes are all done you will not even recognize these humble beginnings. Basically everything on the bikes right now will be replaced and/or stripped down and then re-done to a new shine. Phase #1 is officially underway.

Yes, the circus show just does not stop with young Magnus Bjorn around. I am not too sure where he picked it up from but one day we woke up and this is what we saw - and he has not been able to stop since! This Bjorn is a true nut sometimes!

Ishockey: Vancouver Canucks - Minnesota Wild

Well, we are days away from the 2009/10 season and so far everything in Canuckville seems to be running smoothly. As I have said before, one thing Canucks fans are bred to have is hope and once again I begin the new year with much of it. Are they a Cup contending team? Not too sure about that, but I do like what I see so far. Obviously we live and die with Luongo but I will take that any day; defense is great and up front our bottom two lines are solid, but I do worry about secondary scoring after the Sedins. I am also very excited to see young Cody Hodgson (hopefully) make the team. So, let’s hope for a year with no injuries and one that moves the team further ahead in its pursuit for the Stanley Cup. Go Canucks Go!

Poker Playing Dogs

One final painting project I have during my time in China is to try and find an artist who can capture the pure essence of the ‘Dogs Playing Poker’ painting and transfer it into ‘Dogs Playing Mahjong.’ I want to try and encapsulate everything I can of the game of Mahjong and Chinese society and have it show in this painting: the smoking, the rolled up shirts, the yelling, ganbei glasses, bijou bottles, manbags, large tinted sunglasses, government propaganda, the shang ting le (game point in mahjohn) - I want the whole gammit. Now, I have no idea how I am going to convey all of these ideas and have the artist understand and appreciate the concept of the dogs painting as well (a translator will most definitely be recquired!) I am going to try my artist guy downstairs at Song hai li and see if he is up to the challenge, but for now, if any of you have ideas that you feel are necessary for this painting please drop me a line.

Lego

LEGO Star Wars

The day has finally come: Magnus now enjoys playing with Lego! For the past couple of years we have continued to buy the Danish made toy but have never been successful in captivating his interest with it. But now, for whatever, reason he has come to really enjoy it and can be seen lounging around the house building new inventions everyday - and I couldn’t be happier! As a child, Lego was without question my favorite toy growing up. I loved how versatile it was and loved the imagination it evoked every time I played with it. Hopefully Magnus and Svea will continue to enjoy Lego and grow up to share with me the nostalgia of these wonderful plastic cubes!

The Mindscape of Alan Moore

September 11, 2009

Alan Moore, the writer of the Watchmen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, Lost Girls and many more brilliant works of literature released a documentary film a few years back, to which I have just recently finished watching. Since becoming re-hooked onto comics, or graphic novels, I have become a huge fan of this man and his wonderful talents. This documentary showcases his very firm (and strange) beliefs as a person and an artist which was a fascinating insight into his work as a whole. He is an artist to the purist form and truly believes in his craft as doing something for the collective good of people and not just to be done as a means of simplistic entertainment - and there is no question I respect his talents and personality immensly. So, if you are not aware of this gentlemen and his body of work I strongly suggest you figure out a way to give him a read!

English Muffins

September 9, 2009

muffins

Since I am on a little rant here about some of the issues of living in China, let me tell you all another story detailing the complexities of life here in the Middle Kingdom - and that is, of course, the purchasing of english muffins for my eggs benedict. Now I suppose the mere fact that we have english muffins in China is a treat in itself, but man-oh-man, the process of buying the ones that are here is of epic proportions! What I am about to tell you is the exact same chain of events that happens to me everytime - here it goes: First, I must get into a zen-like trance in order to mentally prepare for challenge that lies ahead, I then get on my motorized bicycle and ride down to our local McDonald’s. Once inside, I quickly sneak over to the far right side of the counter and talk to the managers in light green shirts (which also happens to be the exact same people for the past two years!) and I ask to buy 4 pieces of morning bread - zhaoshan mianbao - and it is from this precise moment where the madness begins. The manager will ask other workers what my request is, a small huddle will ensue and then from there one worker with minimal English skills will emerge. I then ask again (in English) for the morning bread, she will pause, scratch her head and then re-ask the manager (in Chinese) as to what I am talking about - it is also usually around this time that a mass curiosity of what I am doing hits the entire restaurant and everyone begins to stare at me. Once my request is figured out I immediately get told meiyou - or “no have” as it translates - which is then accompanied with the customary wave-off to my face. Because I have done this many times before I remind them that they do, in fact, have this type of bread and I ask again - the wave-off is repeated in the hopes that I will leave them alone. I then ask for the foreigner brochure that shows the menu and do my best to re-explain to them exactly what it is I want. By now the manager has left and has officially assigned a lower echelon employee to deal with me; and from here I succeed in detailing my wish to the point where it is completely undersood what it is I want; but I then quickly get my third wave-off - meiyou. Now slightly frustrated, I again explain to them that I have come in to this store many times and have purchased english muffins successfully and simply wish to do the same again right now. Sensing my frustration, the managers now come back onto the scene, talk to the person who has been assigned to me, they all deliberate in back of the kitchen far away from the freak show I have created and then come back and say they can do it. Success! This process is usually 30 minutes and happens everytime-single-time. So, the next time you are eating eggs benedict with english muffins that you have purchased at your local grocery store just think of what it takes to do the same in the Middle Kingdom - that is life in China to a tee!

China!

September 8, 2009

old china

Our Ayi quits, then she doesn’t. For the life of me I will never fully understand how this system works over here in China. I have lived in this country for six and a half years and attempting to understand its inner workings and deal with the people can still perplex me at times. I realize that my lack of understanding (or language skills) is part of the problem, but geez, co-existing over here can sometimes be enough to want to rip your hair out - and that is certainly how I feel today. In the end all will be well in our household and we will all continue to pretend that nothing happened, but for the life of me I do not understand why it had to happen in the first place. China!

Chang Jiang 750

September 4, 2009

change jiang2

Today is a very exciting day for me, because today is the day I get to drive into Dalian and purchase the one and only Chang Jiang 750! Yes, for 6 years I have longed to own this vehicle and I cannot believe it has finally come to light. Now, by no stretch of the imagination will this purchase come easy; the basic principle of my owning this bike is that I have to pay for it all on my own - which means my sorry ass is going to have to find some lowly alternative methods to producing cold hard cash! But in reality, I am happy to do so because I am just so excited to have the opportnity to own this classic beauty. So, the deal is I will be going into Dalian today to purchase two (one for me and one for my Uncle Case) older versions of this bike and then get to watch our beauty mechanic transform them into glowing new(er) models. The bikes will be taken apart, rebuilt/painted and chromed in roughly 30-40 days and I simply cannot wait! So folks, stay tuned to reports of one of my most exciting projects to date - the Chang Jiang 750 with sidecar.

**Update** - Driving the Chang Jiang 750 in the pouring rain is not a wise idea!

Thank You

Disco Svea 2007 003

First thing I want to say now that I am back in action is a big thank you to Gramma Judy and Papa Joe for all their wonderful hospitality over the summer months. All of us absolutely love coming to Victoria and spending time with you and always feel sad when we leave. The house is always full of laughter, big drinks and good times! We all miss you guys dearly and can’t wait to come back next year and see you again.

Love,

Damn Firewall!!

September 3, 2009

firewall_ver2

Ladies and gentlemen, I am terribly sorry for the long delay in posts but true to form the Great Firewall of China is proving to be a giant pain in the ass! The level of fear the Chinese government continues to have with internet sites is beyond ridiculous and doing simple chores on your computer over here requires a great deal of patience and a lot of savvy with proxy things and all that kind of crap - to which I have very little. Anyways, slowly we are getting everything adjusted and will be ready to continue at our normal pace very soon. Stay with us folks!
